I’ve got an overflowing bookshelf in my room dedicated to books on writing. A lot of them have given me invaluable advice and helped me to work on my problem areas, but there’s one area of advice that I don’t agree with.
Almost every one of those books says that you cannot make a story out of something you dreamt. I don’t mean that in the DREAM BIG way, but literally, dreams. In most cases, these books on writing are right. People say ‘I had the most AMAZING dream last night, it should be a movie!’ and then promptly forget that their dream made very little sense. There is no structure to dreams, no beginning, middle and end in a story-sense. Your dreams are like loose pages of a manuscript, unnumbered and in disarray. Parts of it might be awesome, but there’s no string from A to B.
